Clash for Windows

No longer maintained

Clash for Windows became the basis for a large body of tutorials and configuration habits, so it still appears on older devices, legacy screenshots, and historical documentation. It follows the original Clash architecture and remains familiar to long-time users, but its discontinued maintenance means it is no longer suitable for new installations or as a baseline for long-term configuration changes.

If you still use CFW, record mixed-port, allow LAN, the system proxy, the configuration-file location, and frequently used proxy groups before migrating. After importing the same subscription into the new client, verify browser and application connections in rule mode before deciding whether to enable TUN. Do not copy every local override from the old client into the new environment.

Android

Clash Meta for Android is aimed at users familiar with Android network permissions and rule-based proxying. It takes over traffic through the system VPN interface and uses the Meta core to handle subscriptions, proxy groups, and rules. It suits users who need detailed mobile control and are willing to check background activity, battery policies, and per-app behavior.

Android manufacturers impose different restrictions on background processes. If the connection drops after the screen locks, check battery optimization, background activity, and VPN permissions before changing the subscription. After importing a configuration, choose a proxy group and establish a connection first, then enable overrides or advanced DNS settings gradually to make the source of problems easier to identify.

Surfboard

Independent implementation

Surfboard is an Android rule-based proxy client with an independent implementation; it is not a Clash core fork. It handles some common rule-proxy configurations, but compatibility cannot be judged by the file extension alone. Some Clash-specific fields, proxy-group behavior, or DNS options may require adjustment.

If you already have a Surfboard-compatible configuration or know its rules and interface, you can continue using the established workflow. If the subscription is explicitly generated around mihomo extension fields, Clash Plus or Clash Meta for Android is usually the more direct choice. When an import fails, check the configuration syntax instead of repeatedly changing system VPN permissions.

No longer maintained

ClashX Meta is primarily designed for the macOS menu bar workflow, with simple controls that help users familiar with legacy setups identify existing settings. Since the project is no longer maintained, it is not recommended as the default choice on a new device. For a fresh macOS installation, compare Clash Plus, Verge Rev, and FlClash first.

Before migrating, quit the old client and turn off the system proxy to prevent multiple programs from changing proxy settings at once. Then import the subscription into the new client, check the system proxy port and mode, and test both browser and command-line tools. If the old configuration contains local rules, verify each field against the new core’s support.

Migration and verification

Four checks when switching from an old client

Client migration is more than reinstalling a program. Legacy settings may include local ports, overrides, DNS configuration, and system permissions; copying every file directly can carry old problems into the new environment.

    Record existing ports and proxy mode

    Check the old client’s mixed-port, HTTP, or SOCKS port, and record whether it currently uses rule, global, or direct mode. Turn off the system proxy before quitting the old client to prevent the old and new programs from competing for the same listening port.

    If the subscription is still valid, import it into the new client rather than copying cached files from the old one. This reduces compatibility issues caused by paths, database formats, and client-specific fields.
